About
us
In August, 1926, the Fellowship Baptist Church grew out from a branch of the former Jones Grove Baptist Church. The first call meeting was held at the home of Sister Julia Key on Douglas Street in Augusta, Georgia where several other meetings followed. It was there that the Church decided to call the Reverend L.T. Johnson as the Pastor.
The Church later moved to Shiloh Orphanage located on Fifteenth Street to have the first fellowship services. Reverend Warren Jones and Reverend Kit Jones organized the church. The following Deacons helped: Jim Smith, Sam Brown Luke, George Evans, and Thomas Walker. The members were as follows: Bro. Dan Walker, Sis. Julia Key, Sis. Biola Key, Sis Charolette Williams, Sis. Beulah Smith, Sis. Lillie Boyd, Sis. Essie Brown, Sis Laura B. Green, and Sis Mary Lizzie Green.
Sis. Ada Holmes was the first member baptized and Bro. Thomas Walker was the first Deacon ordained. The Services were held at Shiloh Orphanage until they were able to raise enough money to buy a lot. The members congregated and decided to purchase this site where the Church is presently located.
Before the deed of the land was obtained, the Lord called Reverend Johnson from labor to his reward. The entire membership was sorry about the death of Rev. Johnson for the church was left without a Pastor and a Leader. Still, the plans of God had to be fulfilled; Therefore, the members looked to the Lord and continued His work. Through the efforts of the members and Deacons, the deeds to the lot were secured. At that time, Reverend J.D. Williams was selected as the Pastor. The congregation marched from Shiloh Orphanage to these grounds to dedicate it as a sacred place of worship. Shortly after the dedication, the members assembled for the purpose of organizing a club to raise money to buy a house from McBean, Georgia. With the help of the members, Deacons, and friends, the first Church was built.
A short time later, Reverend. J.D. Williams resigned. Again, the church was left without a leader. With the aid of prayer, Reverend Hall was selected as the Pastor. Under the leadership, much was done for the upbuilding of the Church.
Reverend Hall served for several years and then resigned. After which Rev. Robert Walker was called as the Pastor. He also resigned after several years. The next Pastor was Rev. W.M. Anderson. Many souls were gained through his leadership. After his resignation, the church went down. With the Church at heart, Deacon Jerry Brannon got the members together and began having services again. The Son of the House was made Pastor.
Later the members called Rev. T.M. Burton as the Pastor. He served for a short time and then reigned. Rev. D.M. Gaines was selected and he soon resigned.
In 1949, the church was consumed by fire and was burned to the ground. Most of the members scattered and went to other places. A few of the members had the Church at heart and meetings were held from house to house.
Rev. T.M. Walker was called as Pastor and he served for a number of years and resigned. We were able to rebuild the church and in 1961 when Rev. J.W. Fouch was called to Pastor and served for 28 years until God called him from his labor to his reward. Under Rev. Fouch’s leadership, much work was done to the church and many souls were saved. In 1989, Rev. Wilson Johnson was called to Pastor and he served for 14 years until God called him home from his labor to reward. Under the leadership the church was renovated inside, new pulpit furniture was purchased, a new piano and new hymn books were brought. Two houses next door were purchased and torn down for more parking areas. A new P.A. system was also purchased. We all loved Rev. Johnson, but God loved him best. Rev. John Lockhart was called as Pastor in November of 2003. Under his leadership, he baptized many new members, organized a mission, and installed two new air conditioners/ heating units. He also added two bathrooms to the front of the church, added handicap ramps, and made other improvements to the church building. Rev. Lockhart organized an annual community outing, an outreach ministry and purchased blueprints for a new Fellowship Baptist Church. Property that is used as the church annex was purchased on August 5, 2011. Rev. John Lockhart served for a number of years and retired in February 2020.
On May 24, 2020, the church called a meeting where the Church appointed Minister Morris Jones, Jr. as the acting Minister. Rev. Jones Ordination and Installation were held June 28, 2020. Under the leadership of Pastor Jones, Fellowship Baptist Church sponsored food drives for the community instituted a Men Ministry and a Prayer Ministry. Pastor Jones has made serval improvements to the building. Pastor Jones has also provided leadership during the Covid19 pandemic through drive-up Park and Praise services, media/online teaching, and development while keeping all members, visitors and community safe. The first objective is to retrieve lost sheep through our Savior by preaching, teaching, and witnessing to the world. These evangelistic efforts go beyond the walls of the sanctuary. The second objective of our mission is to teach, nurture, and encourage participation in church ministry, promote family enrichment and the spiritual growth of the members of the church congregation, and to foster all and teach on development of disciples for the Kingdom of God.
Our
Vision Statement
<
To fulfill the Great Commission given by Jesus Christ, our Lord, and Savior, by sharing Christ with our local community and worldwide; to be accomplished by the preaching and teaching the Word of God through both printed and electronic media so that all may come to repentance and accept Jesus Christ as Savior and Lord of their lives.
